Self Reflecting

“I learned this, at least, by my experiment:  that if one advances confidently in the direction of his dreams, and endeavors to live the life which he has imagined, he will meet with a success unexpected in common hours.”

-Henry David Thoreau

That’s a lot of big words, but I think I get the gist of it.  Thoreau is one of my favorite writers and poets.  I’m a firm believer that generally in life hard work leads to success, and once you find out what you want to do with your life, you can spend the rest of your life going after it.  Many times answering that question is the hard part.  We ask ourselves, “Why are we here?”, “What’s my purpose?”, “What’s the next step?”  I’m not really here to answer any of that.  But that’s the point.  That’s something only you can answer by giving it a shot.  By putting yourself out there and asking these questions and somewhere down that path finding an answer.  The thing is we are all here to do something different.  How boring would that be if we all liked the same things, had the same point of views, and sought the same things in life.  I tried many things in life.  I tried skateboarding, sports, school, woodworking, training people, being a CrossFit athlete, training horses, cowboying, drawing, play guitar, and I didn’t feel a pull to being a trainer (specifically CrossFit Trainer) like anything else.  I feel like the cowboy in me, is something that’s in my blood.  My dad was talking to us this weekend about his childhood, and how they lived life.  I hung on to every word like a kid hearing his hero speak about his adventures fighting crime.  I hadn’t heard a lot of those stories until my recent years in life.  It makes my hero ever more amazing.  I’ll always be cowboy inside.  Something about getting on a horse that’s never been ridden and not knowing if it’ll buck, or take to it and be a friend you feel you can trust excites me beyond words.  Seeing how much try they have and how good they can be and understanding the relationship you have that most call control.  You have to show the horse its part in the relationship and you upholds yours.  A lot of that I see in what we do in the gym.  I see people grow and succeed everyday.  I see so much potential in people and how one hour in the gym a day can express that.  Today Erica hit a double, touch and go rep, at a weight she couldn’t do a year ago when she was training even harder.  You can’t find that in any of my textbooks that I had from college.  The exercise science world has yet to grasp that.  But, that’s what excites me.  That’s what get me up in the mornings.  I am not in the fitness industry, I am in the people industry.
